Torben Enghoff (f. 1947), saxophone player, composer, writer.
In the fifties he started out on violin, guitar and the clarinet, saxophone since 1961, self-taught. From 1967 with Maxwells, Creme Fraiche, Santa Cruz etc, and groups in his own name. As a jazzman Enghoff has experienced playing with Pepper Adams and Red Rodney and leading Danish players such as Thomas Clausen, Jesper Lundgaard and Alex Riel.
Formed New Danish Saxophone Quartet in 1986 and Copenhagen Saxophone Quartet in 1997. Both quartets have been travelling a lot abroad and have been performing many works by leading contemporary Danish composers who wrote particularly for the two ensembles. In 2003 Enghoff and the quartet received the P2-prize for best chamber CD recording of 2003 with sonatas by Scarlatti.
Enghoff composed for the jazz groups, but didn’t start to do the scored music until 1999. He has been composing for such well known ensembles as The Kontra Quartet, Cikada String Quartet and The Wind Quintet of The Oslo Philharmonic.
Enghoff has also composed many songs for mixed choir. Several of the songs are published by Wilhelm Hansen and 15 of them are recorded on a CD ( Classico ).
In 2011 Musica Ficta has recorded and performed Enghoff's new collection of songs for choir based on love poems from the middle ages to the present.
Since 1970 Enghoff has been writing articles and reviews especially in the jazz area. Among other things he is a contributor to The Gad’s Music Encyclopedia and has written a book on many aspects of saxophone playing ( Edition Kontrapunkt ) as well as a book with 20 pieces for educational use ( Edition Dansk Sang )
